Godly Wisdom

In the recent case involving a high profile mega church leader who was found guilty of misappropriating a large amount of the church’s money, he posted on his Facebook on the day before he started his jail sentence that, “I have made unwise decisions in the past that have led me to where I am today.  I am filled with grief and regret over my mistakes and I sincerely ask for your forgiveness.”

My wife read the book “The Bait of Satan” by John Bevere recently and she shared with me what she learnt.  I would like to share some of these points in this reflection.

Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil

It has been an exciting year for our church life.  The decision to go back to basics by studying the book “Discipleship Essentials” by Greg Ogden has enabled us to focus again on what it means to be a disciple of the Lord.  But really, there should not be any distinction between a Christian and a disciple. Elder Kelvin Chen, in his sermon last Sunday (“Follow me, as I follow Christ”) reminded us that when we accept Christ as our Saviour and Lord, we not only become a Christian, we also become His disciple.  So we can’t say we are Christians, but we are not ready to be His disciples.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church…”Ephesians 5:25

By the Lord’s grace and mercy, Wilma and I will celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary tomorrow (9 June).  It has been a more-than-wonderful journey, not without its ups and downs.  But the Lord is gracious and He has lovingly led us through it all and blessed us with 3 wonderful children.  My heart is filled with gratitude, thankfulness and joy.

Towards “True Christian Manliness”

The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore was started on 12th January 1930 right here in our church. As we celebrate BB Day today, we give thanks to the vision of Sir William Alexander Smith when he founded the BB movement in Glasgow, Scotland in 1883. May the BB continue to be a blessing to the world as we seek to “advance Christ’s kingdom among Boys” and bring them to “true Christian manliness”. Amen

Below is a book review I wrote on “William Alexander Smith of The Boys' Brigade” by F. P. Gibbon when I attended the Basic Officers’ Training Course in 2002.
