My first encounter with BB and GB was in 2012 when I joined Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church as a staff with our BB 1st Company and GB 7th Company.  Prior to that, I only heard about them but had no knowledge and encounter with them.  Ever since my involvement, I began to know more about BB and GB, especially its history.  I am encouraged to learn how God used His faithful people, Mr James Milner Fraser to start BB in 1930 and Ms Elsie Lyne to start GB in 1927 in Singapore.  Would they have expected the BB and GB to have gone this far?  I doubt so.  1 Corinthians 3:7, “So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” Indeed, God is the one who causes the growth of BB and GB to what it is today having more than a hundred companies in different schools.  Despite being a Christian organization, BB and GB are still standing firm and strong in schools.  This is evidently seen in our BB 1st Company and GB 7th Company in Pioneer Secondary School for 20 and 19 years respectively this year.  Though for many years our BB and GB companies are small in number but for a non-national uniform group to remain for 2 decades in a non-mission school is a testimony of the Lord’s work and presence with us.  It is a ‘wow’ factor for me to see the Lord’s hand in our BB and GB.  For this, I give thanks to the Lord.  I believe the Lord has His plan for us.

The launch of the BB Junior Company in Pioneer Primary School again proved God’s faithfulness to us and His presence with us.  From touching base with the Principal of Pioneer Primary School in mid-September to the signing of the MOU in mid-November last year, it was a process of two and a half month.  It was a very smooth and swift process.  To date, we have 26 Junior Boys with us.  These Boys have been very enthusiastic for the past six parades.  I thanked God for the opportunity to be able to witness and be involved in this whole process.  The launch of the Junior Company is exceptionally meaningful and significant for us being the 1st Company as we celebrate BB 85th anniversary with the Trooping of Colours on 28 February.  This marks another milestone for our church in setting up a Junior Company after 85 years as we aim to be “Proclaiming Salvation, Perfected in Christ”.  This is only possible because God made it possible in His own timing.  This is another ‘wow’ factor for me to witness God’s perfect timing.  My heart is filled with joy and gratitude.

There are people who asked me why our church sponsored a BB Company that is so far away from Prinsep Street.  I guess the question is not why but how.  How can we be a blessing to the Boys and Girls and even to the neighbourhood in Jurong West while we are ‘far’ away from them?  Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Jurong West may be ‘the ends of the earth’ to many of us who live nowhere near Jurong West.  Speaking from experience, it can be a pain just on the travelling itself.  However, isn’t this a command from our God – to be His witness to the ends of the earth?  Having our presence in Pioneer Primary and Secondary Schools is an opportunity for us to be a blessing to our Boys and Girls who come from various background and to influence them with biblical values and principles.  If God willing, we would also become a blessing to the whole school and even to the residents.  It is an opportunity to be His witness.  Hence, despite the long journey, it has been and is still a joy for me to minister to our Boys and Girls.  It is a privilege for me as well to be able to share biblical values and principles to them during the parades.  What is most joyful and encouraging is to hear parents’ approval of their son and daughter to be involved in BB and GB.  The parents of one of our Boys gave their definite approval and support for their three sons to join BB and participate in all BB activities.  Hearing this from a non-Christian parent is most comforting and encouraging.  It makes my day.  The overseas CIP trip to Vietnam with the GB last year was another encouraging episode.  Two mothers of our Girls joined us in the trip as well.  I was paired to room with one of the mothers.  Praise the Lord, I have the opportunity to know this parent, her work, her beliefs and her family.  It was really a fruitful and enjoyable time spent with the parent and our Girls.  I realized there are lots of potential in our BB and GB ministries; it is an outreach not only to the Boys and Girls but also to their families.  It is a harvest field.

I would like to thank you for your generous financial support to our Boys and Girls every year during the BB Week and GB Fortnight.  Because of your support, the Companies’ funds have been very healthy.  Our Boys and Girls are then able to enjoy fun and meaningful activities.  This month is BB Week.  You have proven yourselves to be generous, so I plead with you to continue your generosity so that our Boys will be encouraged once again. (2 Corinthians 9:6, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously”.)   Allow me to also take this opportunity to urge all of us to regard our BB and GB as a harvest field, an opportunity for us to be God’s witnesses.  On top of your giving, your prayers and involvement in one way or another will also be greatly appreciated.  May the Lord stir and revive our hearts to go beyond ourselves and be a blessing to others.
